The Way of the Cross in Římov
The pilgrimage site of Římov is a completely unique monument of its kind in our country. It is not dedicated to just one saint or a single mystery, but its meaning is threefold.
It encompasses the preparation for salvation, represented by the figure of the Virgin Mary; the atonement offered by Jesus to the Heavenly Father on the cross; and finally the creation of the Church, symbolized by the Loreto chapel, the Way of the Cross, and the Church of the Holy Spirit. One of the most typical elements of this unique site is the realistically expressed narrative. If a gate was to be portrayed, a gate was built; if it was to be a palace, a large chapel was erected—large enough to enter.
The Way of the Cross has a total of 25 stations or chapels. Their distribution over a five-kilometre circuit corresponds to the traditional Way of the Cross in Jerusalem. The stations bear the following names: Farewell, Last Supper, Sheep Gate, Station at the Deserted Village, Station at the Sad Soul, Station on the Mount of Olives, Chapel at Judas, Eighth Station of the Way of the Cross, Station at the Lame Jew, Station at the Kidron, Station at the Water Gate, Chapel of the Eleventh Station, Chapel at Annas, Station at Caiaphas, Chapel of Little Pilate, Station at Herod, Chapel of Great Pilate, Chapel of the Seventeenth Station, Nineteenth Station of the Way of the Cross, Chapel of Saint Veronica, Execution Gate, Station at Simon, Calvary, Penultimate Station with Pietà, Holy Sepulchre.
