Educational Trail: Memories of Novohradsko

This 54 km long educational loop connects 19 stops with panels informing about both the serious and lighter historical facts of each place.

The route leads 90% along paved roads with asphalt surfaces. In some sections, the asphalt is in poor condition – these parts are only suitable for mountain or trekking bikes. Navigation is ensured by official KČT signs for cycling trails (routes 1050, 1046, 34), supplemented by the route’s logo.

The trail starts at the elementary school in Nové Hrady, Komenského street, on the left side when heading from the square to the castle.

End point: The trail finishes again in Nové Hrady.

On the way, you’ll visit the ponds at Janovka or the Žár pond from the Rosenberg period, the Žumberk fortress with its exhibition of painted folk furniture, the village of Horní Stropnice with the Church of St. Nicholas, Dobrá Voda with its baroque pilgrimage church and a beautiful view of the landscape. You'll also ride along a former border guard road (today in poor condition), and near the state border you’ll find a boundary stone and a system of several ponds. In the Žár–Žumberk section, the trail overlaps with the Slepičí Mountains route – here you can choose whether to complete the Memories of Novohradsko route or "switch" to the Slepičí hills.

The trail was established and is maintained by the Novohradská civic society. The information panels also include a German version.

Printed guidebook: The printed guide was published by Novohradská občanská společnost o. s.

The third revised edition (from 2013) can be purchased at the Cultural and Information Centre in Nové Hrady.
