Sokolí hnízdo Educational Trail
This trail introduces visitors to the natural attractions of the immediate surroundings of Nové Hrady and to most of the typical natural and cultural ecosystems of the Novohradské hory Nature Park. This area is home to 70% of plant species and 60% of animal species found in the Novohradsko region.
Start: The trail begins at the Nové Hrady Elementary School in Komenského Street, with the introductory panel on the left-hand side when heading from the town square toward the castle.
Finish: The trail ends at the Nové Hrady Kindergarten in Hradební Street (approximately 300 meters from the starting point).
Description: The trail acquaints visitors with the natural features of the Nové Hrady area and the diverse ecosystems—both natural and cultivated—of the Novohradské hory Nature Park. In this location, 70% of the plant species and 60% of the animal species of the Novohradsko region can be found. Among the plants, visitors may see extensive populations of spring snowflakes as well as protected shrubs such as mezereon and European yew. Among the protected animals are the white-throated dipper, the common kingfisher, and the brown long-eared bat. The area also features several massive, memorial-worthy trees, the most imposing of which is an English oak with a trunk circumference of 8 meters and an estimated age of 400 to 500 years.
