Museum Roubenka in Římov

Museum Roubenka in Římov

A museum where you can learn about the construction of the horse-drawn railway. For children, there is a model railway with trains.

The museum’s name comes from the fact that it is housed in an original log building, one of the oldest structures in the area (1610). The exhibition focuses on the former horse-drawn railway from České Budějovice to Linz and its designer, František Antonín Gerstner, who had a design office in Římov. The exhibition is complemented by a working model railway with trains, created by a German native now living in Římov.

Additional Information:

Římov is an important South Bohemian pilgrimage site. Its history probably dates back to the 10th century, but the first written mention of the village comes from 1395. The real development of Římov as a pilgrimage destination began over 230 years later. In 1648, on the initiative of Jesuit pharmacist Jan Gurre, a pilgrimage site was established with a Loreto Chapel and an extensive Way of the Cross, with its stations scattered throughout the surrounding landscape. A four-sided arcade was built around the Loreto Chapel, followed later by the Church of the Holy Spirit. By the second half of the 17th century, regular pilgrimage events had become established, attracting 40,000 to 80,000 pilgrims annually, according to historical records.
