Komařice Castle
The Renaissance castle is the dominant landmark of Komařice. Unfortunately, it is currently under renovation and not yet open to the public.
The Renaissance castle in Komařice was built between 1565 and 1566 when the then-owner Jiří Kořenský of Těrešov converted the original water fortress. Today, we stand before the castle as witnesses to the consequences of a history that certainly did not favor it. On the other hand, there may be “brighter days on the horizon,” as the castle is gradually being revived. For now, we can only admire it from the outside, where a sandstone Baroque statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, built in 1730, stands in front.
Komařice is known today not only for its Renaissance castle but also for the blacksmith workshop of Mr. Jaromír Čížek and the annual “Meeting of Crafts,” which has taken place every second weekend of August since 2004 at the local forge.
Before heading towards Střížov, it’s worth visiting the area called Želno—a valley north of Komařice that became a pilgrimage site in the 17th century due to belief in the healing powers of St. Barbara’s spring. In 1679, the Chapel of St. Bartholomew was completed here, serving pilgrims for over a hundred years. Although the chapel no longer exists, the spring of St. Barbara still flows today.
