Town of Nové Hrady
The town is located directly on the Czech-Austrian border. It originally served as a guard post at the entrance to the Kingdom of Bohemia, later becoming an important noble residence of the Vítkovci family. At the beginning of the 17th century, the town and the Nové Hrady estate came into the possession of the French Buquoy family.
The town of Nové Hrady offers a wide range of cultural events and activities. Visitors can explore the castle and chateau, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Monastery of Divine Mercy, the Buquoy family tomb, the Buquoy residence converted into a wellness hotel, a smithy, the Koželužna gallery, the town hall, the Nové Hrady Museum, the Iron Curtain Open-Air Museum, and many other attractions. The historic town center is designated as a municipal heritage zone.
Do you know that...
…not far from Nové Hrady lies the romantic landscape park and national natural monument in the valley of the Stropnice stream – Terčino údolí (Theresa's Valley)? The park with an artificial waterfall was built in 1756 by Count Jan Nepomuk Buquoy at the suggestion of his wife, Countess Terezie Buquoyová, after whom the park is now named.
