Do you know that...
…a small herd of goats and sheep at the Strakonice Castle Safari partly originates from private breeder Petr Ředina and partly from the Ohrada Zoo in Hluboká nad Vltavou. The goat was one of the first animals domesticated by humans – as early as 8800 BC. Domesticated animals first spread in regions such as Palestine, Persia, Mesopotamia, and Egypt, and gradually reached Europe. The oldest goat remains in Europe from the Neolithic period were found around Stuttgart and at several locations in Switzerland.
In many parts of the world, the goat is a significant livestock animal. Globally, several hundred million goats are bred in about 500 different breeds. These breeds vary in size, color, productivity, and more. Many belong to hardy breeds with low productivity, suited for grazing in tough environments, requiring minimal shelter, cold-resistant, and capable of foraging on otherwise unusable land. In Central Europe, however, one mostly encounters highly productive breeds, classified by use into dairy, meat, and fiber-producing categories.
