Egon Schiele’s Cottage

Egon Schiele’s Cottage

The charm of the garden cottage in the southern meander of the Vltava River, where the world-renowned painter Egon Schiele lived and created in 1911.

History
The garden cottage on a terraced slope was built in the late 17th century. In 1911, the world-famous painter Egon Schiele (1890–1918) lived and worked here. Willi Lidl, a local high school student, arranged the lease, selected the house, and oversaw renovations. Thanks to the generosity of textile merchant Max Tschunk, Schiele and his red-haired companion Wally Neuzil were allowed to live rent-free. Schiele adored the “summer house” and its flower-filled terraces. He made numerous studies here—depicting visiting children, elderly women, veteran soldiers, and young girls—painting on wooden panels; these works include the famous “Town on a Blue River,” “Dead Town,” “Night Krumlov,” and “View of Krumlov Roofs.” He asked 100 crowns for each, but apparently no one in Krumlov bought them at the time.

What You’ll See
The room where Schiele lived and worked in 1911 is open to the public. Step into the authentic setting of his creative studio—the birthplace of his renowned Krumlov works. You can linger in the room and then relax on the terrace with a glass of wine or coffee.

The garden studio is set among flower terraces and a small vineyard, close to the rose garden and the Synagogue. On the ground floor, a café serves quality coffee, wine, snacks, with seating inside and out.

Below, on the Vltava riverbank, there is a new water access with a floating dock. Relax on sunbeds and borrow a blanket for a riverside picnic.
