Replica of the Iron Curtain in Bučina

Reconstructed border barrier.

At the replica of the Iron Curtain, you’ll travel 40 years back in time. It evokes memories or imaginations of the frustration that came with the inability to travel freely.

The Iron Curtain consisted of an approximately 20-meter-wide zone with barbed wire fences. Some of the wires were electrified with high voltage, others lay on the ground, and some sections were even mined.

In forested areas, clearings were cut to maintain the barrier, which are still visible today—both on maps and in the terrain. The curtain followed almost the entire border with Austria and Germany, with guard towers positioned so that each had a line of sight to the next.

Construction of the Iron Curtain began in April 1951 and it remained in operation until 1989, when it began to be dismantled at the end of that year. As a result of its construction, many homesteads, villages, chapels, and churches had to be vacated, and a significant part of mountain life history was irretrievably lost.
