Water-Powered Sawmill Peníkov

Water-Powered Sawmill Peníkov

Due to its unique completeness, originality, and preserved equipment, the sawmill has been declared an immovable cultural monument. The origin of the sawmill and Doubek’s mill in Peníkov is not precisely known; the year 1865 is often cited, to which the current internal equipment of the sawmill is dated.

Water from the pond regularly powered the sawmill and mill until after World War II. The 1950s brought an end to the operation of both buildings. The mill ceased operations completely, while the sawmill was used occasionally until the early 1970s. Subsequently, due to a lack of maintenance, the water wheels were destroyed and the pond began leaking into the understructure. The seeping water caused the collapse of the stone walls supporting the all-wooden upper floor.

The water source powering the sawmill is the pond, with the sawmill located just below the dam. Water flows through the inlet channel and fills the intake box. The flow through the wheel is controlled by a rod and lever from within the sawmill.

Since 2011, the sawmill has been leased by Slavonická renesanční o.p.s., which organizes regular tours and maintains the structure in cooperation with the municipality of Český Rudolec.
