Additional information

The history of coexistence between humans and cats spans four thousand years. Over such a long time, many artistic objects have been created depicting this noble animal, which has become a muse and inspiration for many artists. At the museum, you can see what mummified cats from Thebes looked like or view Roman mosaics again featuring cats. The cat was highly valued and worshipped in ancient Egypt, where it represented a mythical symbol. The centerpiece of the museum is a two-meter-high replica of a cat statue representing the Egyptian goddess Bastet, the original of which dates from the 8th to 4th centuries BC.

The museum also focuses on organized breeding of pedigree cats – cups and diplomas commemorate the tradition of Czech pedigree cat shows. The exhibition is complemented by interesting texts on the walls about the history of humans and cats, the origin and spread of cats around the world, and about feline physiology and psychology. In the corridor with vaulted historical ceilings, you can see large-format photographs of cats. Finally, visitors can purchase a lovely “cat” souvenir at the museum reception. But don't expect to find any live specimens – the most beautiful ones stay at home.
