Zelendárky
The Zelendárky Natural Monument includes a system of 10 ponds located between Medenice and the floodplain of the Blanice River.
It represents an example of a harmonious landscape composed of both natural elements and man-made structures, such as ponds and traditional folk architecture.
The largest pond, Velká Rabyně, was established as early as 1489 and covers an area of 31 hectares. The creation of the pond system was initiated by Jiřík Zelendar of Prošovice, nephew of the renowned pond builder Jakub Krčín of Jelčany. The Zelendárky educational trail runs through this beautiful area and is also suitable for cyclists.
Several protected animal species can be found within the natural monument area. These include green frogs, European tree frogs, yellow-bellied toads among amphibians, grass snakes among reptiles, and common quail and red-backed shrike among birds.
Botanical highlights:
Oligotrophic to mesotrophic still waters of lowland to subalpine altitudes in continental and alpine zones and mountain areas of other regions, with vegetation of the classes Littorelletea uniflorae or Isoëto-Nanojuncetea; natural eutrophic water bodies with vegetation types of Magnopotamion or Hydrocharition.
