Velký Tisý

Velký Tisý

The fifth largest pond in the Czech Republic

Velký Tisý Pond was built in 1505 by Štěpánek Netolický and later enlarged by Jakub Krčín. Since 1957, it has been a national nature reserve and an important bird habitat. Velký Tisý is the largest pond within the Velký and Malý Tisý National Nature Reserve and part of one of the largest ornithological reserves in the Czech Republic. This reserve is a typical example of the Třeboň region landscape. It consists of a complex of eleven ponds, wetlands, riparian forests, and waterlogged meadows covering an area of 616 hectares. Among the bird species that nest here are the great crested grebe, grey and great white heron, common teal, and the white-tailed eagle, the largest bird of prey in the country.
