Sand Dune near Vlkov
The sand dune near Vlkov is the most famous sand formation in the Třeboň region.
It is a unique nature reserve in South Bohemia, located about one kilometer northwest of the village of Vlkov near Veselí nad Lužnicí. This sand dune spans 80 × 60 meters and rises up to 4 meters in height. It was formed by sand drift from the Lužnice River, dating back to the Ice Age.
This important natural reserve is home to rare flora and fauna. Notable plant species include Moehringia morisonii, fine-leaved and rough-leaved fescues, and Corynephorus canescens. Animal life includes large colonies of the solitary bee Andrena vaga, various species of digger wasps and sand wasps, and the thermophilic fly Trixoscelis marginella. The rare beetle Anisoplia villosa develops its larvae in the sand, and the wolf spider Arctosa perita also inhabits this area.
