EuroVelo 13: Bohemian Canada

The international long-distance cycle route EuroVelo 13 stretches for over 10,000 km, with 867 km following the Czech border with Bavaria and Austria. Its mission is to continuously remind us of the history of the so-called “Iron Curtain,” which divided Europe for more than 40 years. Along the EV 13 route in South Bohemia, you will encounter many places that introduce you to this poignant history, whether through informative panels or small museums with period exhibits (e.g., Bučina, Nové Hrady).

"Whether it’s a November morning as you walk near Malíkov, as you run from Mutyněves to Ratmírov and smell the smoke of autumn fires, as you joyfully descend into Hrutkov and glide between the fields. The silence within gives you strength and your legs lightness and swing. The kilometers fly by, and the smile stays on your face. More and more."
These are the words of Petr Pokovba from the website ceskakanadavypravuje.cz.

The name "Bohemian Canada" dates back to the late 1920s, coined by Jaroslav Arnošt Trpák, a native of Jindřichův Hradec, who was inspired by his travels in North America. The many deep forests, pastures, hills, water surfaces and glacial erratics, as well as the damp weather, cold winters and sparse settlement, all resemble the landscapes of northern Canada. Human-made features also reflect the historic milestones that have shaped the landscape to its current form.
