5 Days in South Bohemia with a Wheelchair and Kids

Traveling for people in wheelchairs presents numerous challenges that can complicate planning and execution. In South Bohemia, services for wheelchair users are gradually improving, making this region an increasingly attractive destination for travelers with limited mobility. We invited Martin Zach (a former Man of the Year who has been in a wheelchair since a spinal injury) and his family to explore and verify accessible opportunities and activities for families with children.

České Budějovice and Surrounding areas

Martin and his family stayed in České Budějovice, where they visited the South Bohemian Museum. The main entrance is equipped with wheelchair ramps, and an accessible restroom is available on the ground floor. There are lift platforms leading to the main exhibition spaces on the ground floor, operated by staff who also provide additional assistance. Access to the 1st and 2nd floors is provided by two elevators.

The transitions between exhibition halls on the 1st and 2nd floors are mostly wheelchair accessible, and assistance is available in certain cases. Another accessible restroom is located on the 2nd floor. The museum also offers interactive information kiosks, tactile exhibits in selected areas, and audioguides that can be borrowed from staff.

The family then visited LANNA Café and the Bosonoha Children's Park, which features numerous activities for kids, with Martin even trying out a few of them himself.

Other wheelchair-friendly spots in České Budějovice include the Vrbenské Ponds trail and the ČEZ Vltava Complex. For a barrier-free dining experience, Masné krámy restaurant is highly recommended.

Lipno Without Barriers

Another day is dedicated to Lipno nad Vltavou, where the "Lipno Without Barriers" project offers various activities (handbiking, bobsled track, etc.). Martin tried out Aquaworld Lipno, which features a DELFÍN pool lift for wheelchair users. They also visited the Treetop Walkway Lipno, where you can reach the very top of the walkway with a wheelchair (although the platform to the final level is currently out of order).

The family also explored the Forest Kingdom Lipno, a children’s paradise filled with fun activities. If you visit, note that assistance may be required in the restrooms, which are equipped with grab bars.

You can use the Stezkabus, which operates at regular intervals and takes visitors directly to the Forest Kingdom and the Treetop Walkway. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the longest lake pier in Central Europe!

You can never have enough nature...

We’re heading to the Šumava region, where you can immerse yourself in nature. Be sure not to miss the Kvilda Visitor Center, where the entire circuit is accessible for visitors with limited mobility. However, assistance is recommended due to uneven terrain and inclines.

Another must-see is the Jezerní Slať, a raised peat bog situated on the high plateau of the Šumava plains. It is easily reachable from the parking lot in Kvilda, but there is also parking directly at Jezerní Slať, from which it's about a 300-meter walk.

We also recommend visiting Chalupská Slať, featuring a pond, with an accessible parking lot and boardwalk adapted for wheelchairs. Another great spot is the Owl Aviary in Borová Lada, though some assistance may be needed due to a steeper path leading from the parking area.

From the Wooden Heart of Europe to Prachatice

Start your journey at the Wooden Heart of Europe, accessible via a comfortable (though not paved) cycling path. This approximately 4-kilometer trail is a delight for the soul, offering stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere.

From Volary, head to Křišťanovice Pond for a swim. This romantic spot offers natural bathing in peat water, a unique experience for both kids and adults. On a hot day, we recommend taking a dip (note that there are no showers, and the peat water has a slight cloudiness and reddish tint). You can also enjoy refreshments at the local kiosk. If the weather isn't ideal for swimming, the area is perfect for a walk or ride. The pond is easily accessible from the parking lot in the village of Křišťanovice via a paved road.

Next, explore the historic center of Prachatice, a town that will enchant you with its Renaissance charm. The cobblestone square is picturesque, and there are excellent dining options in town. However, keep in mind that the square has cobblestones, and the designated parking lot is on a hill.

From the town center, it’s just a short distance to the Forest Games Area in Prachatice, where you could easily spend the entire day. Accessible parking is available near the area, which features a firm gravel path winding through the site. Along the way, you’ll find giant ant hills, a spider web, and a bird’s nest. Can the kids make it through the dry-footed course? The play elements are sure to captivate the hearts of both children and adults.

At the end of the trail, a relaxation zone awaits—lay back on a lounger or hammock and gaze up into the treetops. Some assistance might be helpful in parts of this area, but it’s well worth the effort.
