Border Units in Nové Hrady

Few other units of the Border Guard (PS) of the 15th České Budějovice Brigade underwent as many changes in location, name, and numbering as the Nové Hrady company.

In 1951 and 1952, it was officially called "Nové Hrady – Customs Office". In 1953 and again from 1959 to 1964, it bore the name "Sokolí hnízdo" (Falcon's Nest), while from 1953 to 1959 it was known as "Nové Hrady – Sokolí", after the location of its deployment. From 1964 onward, the name Nové Hrady was used. Its numerical designation changed repeatedly: initially 14, briefly 15, then 19, again 15, later 13, 8, and finally from 1979 until the disbandment of the PS in 1991, number 7. For most of its existence, it was part of the 3rd battalion, and from 1978 the 2nd battalion of PS Suchdol nad Lužnicí. In 1955, however, Nové Hrady served as the headquarters of its own battalion – first the 3rd, and from 28 September 1962, the 4th battalion of PS.

Until 1964, the company was located near Nové Hrady in a place called "Sokolí hnízdo". From 1964 to 1987, it was stationed in the town itself, in the Servite Monastery. In 1987, it relocated to a newly built facility closer to the state border. After all these changes, from the end of 1978 until its closure, the company was responsible for a border section 8.8 km long.

During the First Republic, there was a road crossing to Austria at Nové Hrady – Pyhrabruck, which, however, was not reopened after 1945. After 1948, the former crossing became a frequent site of attempted illegal crossings.
